The history of roulette goes all the
back to stories of wheel-based gambling games from ancient Rome and China.
Roulette was invented in France in the 17th Century by mathematician, Blaise
Pascal, who wanted a game which involved betting and where things landed.
The word roulette is actually French for small wheel and that is basically
what roulette is. The game was passed around Europe and flourished in
Germany for a while until it was introduced to Monaco where it became a
smash hit and the town of Monte Carlo sprung up. Roulette become the
foundation upon which this empire was built and truly represents what is
glamorous and opulent about the town. Different versions of roulette histor
credit the French brothers Francois and Louis Blanc of building the first
modern roulette game as we know it.
In 1842 Francois and Lois Blanc made roulette history when they built a
single "0" roulette wheel for King Charles III of Monaco. The brothers
recognized that adding the 0 gave the casino a "house edge" and prevented
the game from being a losing proposition for any casino that gave it a home.
The brothers had need selling the wheel in Germany, but Germany decided to
ban gambling, and the brothers found themselves out of work.
King Charles was eager to alleviate financial woes in his kingdom and built
a casino, and the roulette wheel designed by the Blanc brothers became a
stable source of income for his beleaguered kingdom. Soon, the Roulette
wheel became the symbol for Monte Carlo's posh casino culture, and still is
associated with the old guard of traditional gambling in Europe. That is how
Monte Carlo became so integral to Roulette History.
French Roulette wheel is the game found in Europe, while the "00" or
American Roulette wheel is the game found in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
Roulette is much more popular in Europe, both because of the cultural
context of the game and because the European version has half the house
advantage of the American version, which consequently offers a better chance
of walking away a winner.
Since then the game has gone from strength to strength where it has become a
staple of casinos. It was only a matter of time before the information age
heralded the advancement of roulette online. Online Roulette is very popular
making roulette one of the world's most love games.
Roulette wheels come in different sizes, but generally they are around 3
feet (about one meter) in diameter. You then have online roulette wheels
which are only as big as your monitor. Beside the deceivingly simple look
threads a lot of clever and complicated mathematical design has gone into
it.
The wheel itself is surrounded by a wooden or plastic cover that creates a
slanted wall into which the ball (also called marble in some places) is
thrown. Modern roulette wheels also have security glasses surrounding the
roulette to prevent cheaters from blowing air into the wheel when the ball
slows down and thus affecting the game (see our article on classic methods
of roulette table cheating for examples).
The heart of the roulette wheel consists of numbered slots or pockets that
catch the ball. The roulette wheel is designed so that the ball will always
settle down in one presumably random slot - the slanted walls and the curvy
inner surface of the wheel will always make the ball roll off towards the
opening in which the slots are residing. The ball will inevitably fall into
one of them.
There is a magic and symbolism to the roulette wheel is the distribution of
numbers and colours on the roulette wheel. It is designed in such a way that
the distribution of numbers and colours is statistically even and provides a
fair (equal) chance of any numbers playing down. This is done to normalize
the game odds, which is necessary for more or less complicated roulette
betting. The colours alternate; so do pairs of numbers across the wheel. If
you carefully study the roulette wheel you will soon see a clear pattern in
disposition of the numbers. While it's self evident that no two throws of a
ball are dependent on each other, the normalization is needed because of the
possibility of placing multiple bets under different conditions and odds.
This disposition doesn't bear a lot of relevance for online casinos due to
the way the software works (software program can produce mathematically even
results regardless of actual disposition of the roulette wheel); technically
speaking, the software instantly generates a random game outcome and it is
then presented to the player as a visual projection of the ball falling down
into particular slot of the wheel).
Online Casino Players - At online player will get so many different type of roulette games with different
playing methods for which player likes to play this game rather than other games at online casino hall.
